We piled on Courtney's bed this afternoon and watched the Sound of Music. I'll admit: I had a hard time watching this movie growing up. It seemed so long, and I didn't really understand the Captain's political scruples or grasp the emotion behind Maria's flight from the fancy dinner party. This afternoon, however, I was able to detect previously unnoticed dimensions of Maria -- dimensions that extended beyond her love for children and music. She was so much more than a spunky governess, and I began to understand her wrestle with her relationship with God and her role as a woman, wife, and mother. Needless to say, I have mended my ways and repented of my wary regard for this movie. I am suddenly in love with the entire thing, and I'm looking forward to the time when I am able to watch it again.

Hallelujah! A fellow "Sound of Music" lover!!! This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and not just because of the great music---it's because of the character of the people involved. It's makes me want to be a better, more courageous person.
